Cotea Valeriu, Prof. PhD
Prof. Cotea Valeriu PhD is currently Romania’s expert at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), where he regularly participates in meetings of this intergovernmental organisation where he has held various positions: President of the Expert Group “International Code of Oenological Practices” (2001-2006), president of the Expert Group “Oenological Product Specifications” (2007-2013), president of the Oenological Commission (2012-2015), vice-president of the Oenological Commission (2015-2018), and currently Scientific Secretary of the Oenological Commission of the OIV.
He graduated from the “C. Negruzzi” College Iasi in 1979. Between 1980 and 1984 he studied at the Faculty of Horticulture in Iasi, and in 1991 he obtained his doctorate in viticulture and oenology. Between 1984 and 1986 he worked as a trainee engineer at the State Agricultural Enterprise “Copou”, Iasi. After 1986 he moved to the Faculty of Horticulture, where he held the following positions: scientific research engineer (1986-1990), university assistant (1990-1992), lecturer (1992-1995), asociate professor (1995-1999) and university professor (since 1999). Since 2005 he has been doctoral supervisor at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Iasi. Since 1997 he has also been working at the Oenology Research Centre of the Romanian Academy, Iasi Branch, as a scientific researcher grade I, and since 2011 he has been the coordinator of this centre. During his career he has published alone or in collaboration more than 447 titles, including 32 books and book chapters in prestigious publishing houses, 415 scientific articles, of which 79 indexed by ISI – Web of Science, 248 articles indexed in other international databases (excluding those indexed by ISI) – CAB Abstract, EBSCO, CSA. CAS, VINITI, VITIS-VEA, DOAJ, BASE, SOCOLAR etc., 88 scientific articles published in extenso in volumes of international conferences, 88 scientific articles published in extenso in the volumes of international specialist conferences, as well as 50 other scientific papers and contributions.
He has been a member of the Scientific and Technical Committee of the OIV since 2001. In Romania, he is a member of the National Office of Vine and Wine, President of the Romanian Society of Horticulture-Iasi Branch, member of the Romanian Society of Agricultural Retrology, member of the Association of Authorized Tasters of Romania (ADAR). He has also been or is a member of the editorial board of the magazine “Le Bulletin de l’OIV”, of the horticultural magazine “Mitteilungen Klosterneuburg” in Austria and is foreign correspondent of the scientific magazine “Revue des Oenologues” in France.
He is an associate editor of several ISI-listed journals such as Oeno-One (Bordeaux, France). Since 2007 he has been an expert in the working group “Oenological Practices” of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture, and from 2008-2012 he was a member of the Scientific Council of the Geisenheim Research Institute (Forschungsanstalt Geisenheim), Germany. In 2003 he was awarded the Order of “Faithful Service” in the rank of Knight, in 2009 he received the “OIV Merit Award” for his scientific work for the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, and in 2015 he was awarded the Order of Agricultural Merit in the rank of Knight by the French State. He is the recipient of several awards including the “Ion Ionescu de la Brad” Prize of the Romanian Academy. For his scientific activity he was elected in 2009 full member of the Romanian Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences – ASAS (corresponding member since 2004), corresponding member of the Swiss Academy of Wine (since 2001), corresponding member of the Italian Academy of Wine (since 2002), member of the “International Society for Horticulture Science”, based in Belgium. In 2019 he was elected corresponding member of the Romanian Academy.
